Numi is a free-to-download natural-language calculator for macOS that lets you mix plain English expressions, unit conversions, and arithmetic in a single scratchpad — no equals key required.

What is Numi?

Numi is a Mac utility that replaces the traditional calculator with an intelligent text editor. Instead of clicking buttons in sequence, you type the way you think: "150 USD in EUR", "tip 20% on 87.50", or "project deadline in 45 days" — and Numi resolves each line live in the right margin. It was built by independent developer Dmitry Nikolaev and has quietly become one of those tools that, once installed, you never uninstall.

What does Numi do best?

Numi's strongest suit is collapsing the distance between a thought and an answer. Where Spotlight makes you rephrase your question into calculator syntax, and a spreadsheet demands you learn its formula language first, Numi accepts ambiguity and resolves it gracefully.

A few things I reach for it daily:

  • Multi-line workings. Each line is live. Changing line 2 instantly cascades through everything that references it below — no recalculation dance.
  • Unit conversions woven into arithmetic. "1.5 kg + 300g in lbs" works exactly as you'd expect. Temperature, speed, data sizes, currencies — all handled inline.
  • Time arithmetic. "3 weeks from today" or "now + 6h30m" gives you the resolved date or time without touching a calendar app.
  • Variable assignment. Type "rate = 95 USD" then use rate freely on subsequent lines. This alone turns Numi into a surprisingly capable micro-spreadsheet.
  • Percentage expressions. "20% of 340", "340 + 20%", "what % is 68 of 340" — all parse correctly, a thing that trips up most calculators.

The interface itself is minimal to the point of invisibility: a dark, monospaced scratchpad floating wherever you summon it. It stays out of your way until you need it, then gets out of the way again.

Is Numi free?

Numi is free to download and use for everyday calculations. A paid Pro upgrade unlocks additional themes, a broader currency-conversion dataset, and a few power-user extras — but the core experience, which covers the vast majority of what most people need, costs nothing. It is one of the more honest freemium models in the Mac App Store neighbourhood: nothing essential is paywalled.

Who should use Numi?

Numi earns its place on any Mac where the owner regularly does back-of-envelope maths, currency conversions, or time calculations while working. Freelancers pricing projects, engineers doing quick unit checks, anyone who has ever opened a calculator app, typed a number, and then immediately lost their context — these are Numi's people.

If you live primarily in spreadsheets and need audit trails, pivot tables, or shared data, Numi is not the tool; stay in Numbers or Excel. If your calculations are one-off and conversational, Numi wins every time.

What are the best Numi alternatives?

The closest alternatives occupy slightly different territory. Soulver is the obvious comparison: it is also a natural-language scratchpad but skews toward multi-sheet financial planning and is fully paid, with a polished document model. Raycast's built-in calculator handles single-line expressions well from the launcher, but it is not a persistent scratchpad. Spotlight does simple arithmetic but chokes on units and time expressions. Klack and PCalc are both excellent but traditional — they meet you on the calculator's terms, not yours. Numi sits in a unique middle space: more persistent and powerful than a launcher calculator, lighter and faster than Soulver, and completely free to try.

How does Numi compare to Soulver?

Soulver is the premium option — it has multi-tab document support, richer export, and a more structured approach to building financial models. Numi is the utilitarian scratchpad: faster to open, lighter on the system, and free for the core feature set. I keep both installed. Soulver gets the invoice breakdowns I want to save; Numi handles everything I need to know right now and then forget.
